At Huron House, we are committed to delivering unique programming that has consistently proven effective, positively impacting over 85% of the boys who enter our care. Established in 1970 and proudly serving as a member of Children’s Mental Health Ontario, we offer a treatment-based approach designed to support young boys in their growth into successful adults. Situated on 10 picturesque acres near the shores of Lake Huron in Bright’s Grove, Ontario, our facility is licensed to accommodate up to 28 boys aged 12 to 18. Today, we stand as a dedicated children’s mental health facility, with goals centred on promoting community engagement, educational success, positive transformation, and personal responsibility.
TREATMENT PROGRAMS
Huron House transcends the traditional definition of a residential youth mental health center. Here, we craft programs specifically tailored to meet the ever-evolving needs of our residents. Our treatment framework is built on several core components, divided into three primary focuses: youth-oriented, family-oriented, and community-oriented. Each component is valuable on its own but when integrated, they form a holistic and effective treatment program that truly makes a difference.
At Huron House, we provide a unique and enriching opportunity for all boys who enter our program, designed to foster growth, healing, and personal development.
Youth Oriented Focus
- Counselling:
- Daily group programming covers topics such as anger awareness and management, violence awareness, character building, relationship development, and life skills.
- Individual counselling sessions are tailored to meet the specific needs of each youth.
- Education:
- Access to a Section 23 classroom ensures educational needs are met within the community context.
- Programs are individually tailored to each youth’s needs.
- Nightly homework with staff support and additional tutoring as needed.
- Structure:
- Engages boys in planned and purposeful activities ranging from chores to hobbies, fostering a sense of responsibility and accomplishment.
- Recreation:
- Activities are designed to be healthy and fun, aimed at boosting self-esteem and tailored to individual abilities and interests.
Family Oriented Programming
- Includes both individual and group counseling sessions to support family dynamics and enhance the home environment for our youth.
These programs not only address the immediate needs of the boys but also prepare them for future success by actively involving their families and the community in their treatment and rehabilitation process.
COUNSELLING
At Huron House, counselling is integral to the development of an effective, restorative, and successful plan of care for each resident and their families. Our approach is rooted in the client-centred model of counselling, which emphasizes a collaborative and respectful process. In this model, residents actively participate in setting their own counselling goals and are encouraged to engage cooperatively with the support provided by Huron House staff as they work toward achieving these objectives.
We recognize each resident as a vital member of their personal journey, ensuring that they are treated with respect and dignity throughout their therapeutic process. Occasionally, residents may also engage in external counselling sessions provided by community service partners. This external counselling might predate their admission to Huron House, continuing at the resident’s request to maintain continuity in their therapeutic support.
To ensure the effectiveness of our counselling efforts, each resident’s plan of care undergoes regular clinical reviews. These assessments help monitor progress, evaluate the achievement of established goals, and determine the need for setting new objectives, continually adapting the plan to meet the evolving needs of the resident.
BURSARIES
Huron House offers several educational bursaries designed specifically to assist both current and former residents with post-secondary education expenses. These bursaries aim to provide financial support for tuition and related educational costs. To be eligible, applicants must provide receipts, verification of enrollment, and proof of successful completion of the academic year.
Interested individuals can request a bursary application by contacting the administration office via email at [email protected]. The selection of successful candidates is managed by the Huron House Foundation, which also monitors the recipients’ academic progress and disburses funds at their discretion.
